John Hurley Supports Healthcare for Indiana Farmers |
05 February 2020
Hoosier Farmers and other rural Hoosiers have often suffered from a lack of healthcare benefit options. According to the Indiana Farm Bureau, 43% of Hoosier farmers under the age of 65 have avoided treatment of a health condition due to cost. For those owner-operators with no employees who do not qualify for subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, legislative action is needed to provide coverage. Senate Bill 184 allows the creation of such a non-insurance benefit. This legislation will provide cost effective options for farmers to help ease financial and healthcare burdens. SB 184 passed the Indiana Senate with no opposition and will be in the Indiana House for the second half of this short legislative session. I urge citizens statewide to contact their Representative and ask him or her to vote in favor of the bill. Not only will this benefit rural Hoosiers, but it could become a model for filling coverage gaps for others with limited healthcare options.
